Nightmare
Last night, I had a really bad dream where my brother was dying of cancer and I wanted to go out and see him, but I couldn't for some reason. The rumors of my death were greatly exaggerated.
Basically, I've had a lot going on recently that I'd rather not discuss in public. But now that I'm on winter break, I'm pretty much free again. Anyway, I've recently discovered my love of the Ultima series of CRPGs. My favorite is Ultima VII: The Black Gate, which seems to be common among fans. Now that I've actually played a couple of them (IV and VII), I'm thinking of joining the Ultima Dragons, but I'm not really sure. I might want to actually beat one of them and try out a couple exploits before doing that. Anyway, I'll try to be more regular with my updates. A couple of SaGa Frontier annoyances
For some reason, my PS2 seems to really hate SF. Sometimes in battle, it just locks up, but the music and character/monster animations just continue. It seems to be especially frequent when fighting Shellworms, Rockies, and/or Platoonpi. Also, a message to any GameFAQs SF message board posters reading this: There are no double-S's in Asellus' name. I don't think I need to say why this is such a problem. :P It's still a great game, though, and I'm trying to beat Asellus' quest. I was close, but my memory card with all my SF data disappeared when I was moving to my new room. Kahran042's fanfic tips
I know that a lot of these have been stated before, but hey, what harm could one more listing do? GENERAL -Just because you can write a crossover doesn’t mean you should. ( http://www.fanfiction.net/u/843106/) -People are not obligated to compliment you on your story, especially if it sucks. -Rule of thumb: If you insist that your character isn’t a Mary Sue, chances are s/he is. -Don’t put author’s notes in the middle of your story. Save them for the end. AVATAR:THE LAST AIRBENDER -There are only four elements- water, earth, fire, and air. This means that there are no Shadowbenders, Lightbenders, Woodbenders, Chaosbenders, Lovebenders, etc. -Also, ice, metal, and lightning are subsets of water, earth, and fire, respectively, not separate elements. -Aang is the LAST Airbender, hence the title. FAMILY GUY -The name of the town is Quahog. Not Colhog, Kohog, Koerhåg, or anything else. -Peter’s wife is named Lois, not Louis or Louise. LEGEND OF MANA -Believe it or not, the Jumi story arc isn’t the only one in the game. Why not write about the Dragon or Faerie arcs, or one of the minor arcs, or even one of the stand-alone events? That would be just as interesting as a Jumi fic, if not more so, if only because it‘s not oversaturated. LEGEND OF ZELDA -Tri=three. Hence, there are only three Triforce pieces. TEEN TITANS -As much as I love HIVE Five fics, the other HIVE students need love too! I’d love to see something about Angel or XL Terrestrial, or about why Private HIVE left the Five between “Mother Mae-Eye” and “Lightspeed,” for example. -If you write a Season 6 fic and feature any villains from the first five seasons other than Slade, Blackfire, Brother Blood, Red X, or Dr. Light, you should probably have an explanation of how they got unfrozen. Believe me, I thought that the whole “freezing the villains” thing was kind of lame (kind of really lame, in fact), but still, I just feel that an explanation is needed if they’re unfrozen. An open letter to childfree people:
Listen, I am one of you. I can't stand other people's kids. But, at the same time, I also believe that children are human, and hence have the same basic rights as all humans. I mean, how would you have felt if your parents had walked you on a leash when you were a kid? Also, you complain about kids being obnoxious in public. Well, if you were a little kid, how do you think you would feel about being dragged to some boring fancy restaurant? I know that I wouldn't like it. So, just once, I beg of you to try to understand that as much as you may hate them, children are just as human as you or me, and that they're probably just as miserable being at musicals or fancy restaurants as you are being in the same place with them. 'Sue-free fandoms!?
Believe it or not, there are some fandoms which appear to be free of Mary Sues, or at least aren't listed as entry tags at marysues. A brief list below: American Girl Aqua Teen Hunger Force Katamari Damacy Metalocalypse Monster Rancher Rocko's Modern Life Rugrats Tales of Destiny (the original) Zork I know that there are others, but these were just the only ones that I could think of. I'm pretty ambivalent about this. I'm glad that not every fandom is tainted with 'Sues, but worried because it might just be that the fandoms haven't noticed them. A bizarre rant
Am I the only one who gets annoyed when seeing "Gatling Gun" as an attack/weapon name in an RPG not set in the real world? I mean, 1. Richard Jordan Gatling did not exist in most RPG worlds and, 2. "Chain gun" sounds cooler anyway. In fact, this is really one of my more minor irks, but I just wanted to vent about it, and show off the fact that I know the name of the inventor of the Gatling gun. On a related note, one of my ways to determine whether something named after a real-world place/person is acceptable to use in a fantasy world: If it begins with a lowercase letter (i.e. uranium, china, turkey, lesbian), it's acceptable to use. If it begins with a capital letter (i.e. Gatling gun, Turkish delight, Korean B.B.Q. plate, Japanese stew), it's not. Of course, these are just rules of thumb, and I don't really mind most things that break them. As stated earlier, it's a minor irk, but still an irk. It seems like so much longer, but it was one year ago today that I started my Livejournal. And through all that time, my few devoted fans, assuming they even exist, have stuck with me, through the tears and through the laughter. So, to anyone who's actually reading this, thanks. My problem with fanficrants...
...is that they pretty much crushed my will to write fanfiction. I had a few ideas that I thought were pretty good, but on reading the community, I started to doubt my writing talent, knowing that if I put my stuff in public, they'd spork it and accuse me of being talentless- just because most of my ideas involved crossovers, anachronisms/real-world stuff for humor's sake, and/or slightly-OOC portrayals, again for the sake of humor. But, really, my fanfic idol, Fritz Frandorf, did it, and you don't see a bunch of lj people bashing "Guardian Amulet" or "A Final Fantasy Christmas" or "Cid Wars." So, maybe I'm being paranoid, but fanficrants' utterly heartless nature turned me agaisnt it. | | 2:48 pm |
